The tablets are reportedly 20 percent lighter than the Surface Pro and swap the unit's 12-inch screen for a smaller 10-inch unit. But the Surface tablets haven't seen a proper upgrade in several years.
If not, we'll just keep laughing at Microsoft's Surface team who can't get any traction with their hardware against Apple's line-up no matter how excited Microsoft's Panos Panay gets or that he wears that Moses himself makes their tablets on Mount Sinai. Microsoft reportedly plans to release new 10-inch Surface tablets later this year
Microsoft receives a lot of criticism these days for its increased focus on the cloud and business customers, but it seems that the company remains very interested in the consumer market.
Apple has managed to generate nearly four times the revenue through iPad sales versus the Surface lineup. iPad sales generated $20 billion in revenue in the past four business quarters, while Microsoft managed to generate $4.4 billion in the same period. According to the sources, Microsoft is planning to target the sub $500 market which is now dominated by Apple iPads. That compares with 9.1 million iPads sold in the same period. The models are set to become available as soon as the second half of the year for around $400, Bloomberg reported today. Like the Surface Pro, these models won't be bundled with the company's keyboard cover. Like the Surface 3, the new 10-inch device won't come bundled with any accessories, with said accessories being priced lower than the current offerings.
There will be versions with 64 and 128 GB of storage, and models that connect to LTE cellular networks. It will continue to have the kickstand for upright typing and watching video. And this being Microsoft, there are expected to be multiple SKUs.
