After weeks of speculations, U.S. president Donald Trump has finally announced that he will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore, June 12.

Pompeo, two weeks and one day on the job, returned to the USA on Thursday from what he called a "productive" meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong-un to agree on details for the Trump-Kim summit.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has repeatedly pushed for Trump to raise the issue of repeated abductions of Japanese citizens by North Korea in his upcoming meeting with Kim Jong Un.

Some observers are concerned that South Korea's desire to build peaceful ties with the North may distance it over time from the United States policy of seeking nuclear disarmament at any cost.

Fox News reported that the summit is expected to take place in Singapore in early June.

"We've picked a time".

China looks forward to positive results from the meeting, said the spokesperson, adding that important steps must be taken to promote the denuclearization of the peninsula through political solutions to realize long-term stability in the region. "And I think it'll be very successful".

Kim said during the meeting that the nuclear test site's mission had come "to an end" because the North had completed the process of developing nuclear-capable intermediate-range missiles, ICBMs and other strike means. Flying to western Europe would require a stop or two to refuel.

As the current chair of ASEAN, Singapore is already scheduled to host multiple high-profile meetings this year, the American Enterprise Institute's Dan Blumenthal told Politico, and will also host the ministers of defence from nearly 30 nations early next month at the Shangri-La Dialogue.

But both Washington and Seoul - longtime treaty allies - cooperate closely and also confer with the North's larger neighbor China, which has a stake in the outcome. "We're very clear that the sanctions remain in place until and unless we see visible meaningful action taken by North Korea on the denuclearization track". His family is suing North Korea. Pyongyang has been exceptionally cautious about its public framing of Kim's recent diplomatic moves, which are a major shift from the more aggressive focus on missile launches and nuclear development that drove tensions to a boil a year ago.

The Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore is being talked about as a possible venue. The government there even has a history of putting together high-profile diplomatic events on short notice, hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping's historic 2015 meeting with his then counterpart from Taiwan, Ma Ying-jeou.

During his visit, Pompeo discussed the agenda for a potential Trump-Kim Jong Un summit.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in's administration is conducting its own efforts to normalize ties on the divided peninsula and secure lasting peace.

"I think it will be a big success", Trump said.

But White House officials opposed the idea as it could put undue emphasis on South Korea.

North Korea has invited the outside world to witness the dismantling of its nuclear facilities before.

The three former detainees issued a joint statement on Wednesday thanking Trump for their release.

But tensions have since eased greatly, starting around the time of the North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics in South Korea in February.

Second, Singapore is one of those countries that have links with both the USA and North Korea.

And, more than two decades and multiple provocative weapons tests after the last accord, the threat from Pyongyang has only grown.

Mr Trump announced the date and place of the summit earlier this week, hours after he welcomed home three United States detainees released from North Korea.

A United Nations human rights expert is welcoming North Korea's release of three Americans as "another important building block" for peace prospects. "He, likewise, has been incredibly helpful". "For now, I can only say there's a need to confirm whether these claims are true".

He went on to emphasize instead, "I want to get it finished".
