Pompeo's fate is still not entirely certain with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee set to consider his nomination Monday afternoon. "It is hard to imagine a better nominee for this mission, at this moment, than Mike Pompeo".
The gesture moved Pompeo forward with a vote of confidence from the committee, and will likely see a floor vote on Thursday. That all but assures Pompeo will be confirmed.
"I realise my Democratic friends in many cases feel like that in supporting Pompeo, it's a proxy for support of the Trump administration policies, which many of them abhor", Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker of Tennessee, who has often been unsparing in his criticism of the President, said last week.
By Monday night, Paul had flip-flopped to vote for Pompeo in committee and two more Democrats - Indiana's Joe Donnelly and West Virginia's Joe Manchin - had pledged to back his nomination on the Senate floor, making it a virtual certainty that the one-time Kansas congressman would be the next top USA diplomat.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in a late pivot Monday evening, approved the confirmation of Mike Pompeo to be the next secretary of state, after Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-North Dakota, last week became the first Democrat to announce her support for Pompeo.
Students need written permission to join national walkout against gun violence
It wasn't until 20 children were killed in Newton, Conn., in 2012 that he and his peers got involved in debates over gun laws. The Student Government Association at Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach came up with a slogan for the occasion: Be kind.
In a statement Friday, Coons said, "On vital decisions facing our country, Director Pompeo seems less concerned with rule of law and partnership with our allies and more inclined to emphasize unilateral action and the use of force". Pompeo denounced the Iran nuclear deal and called for US -backed regime change in Tehran.
Pompeo's nomination now goes before the full U.S. Senate.
"I'm glad that he kept an open mind and heard what he needed to hear from Director Pompeo knowing he'll be a good Secretary of State", said Marc Short, Director of Legislative Affairs at the White House.
"As a Kansan, I hold a deep reverence for the sanctity of life, the solidarity of family, and the solemnity of marriage", he said previously.
The full Senate consideration of Mr. Pompeo will provide another opportunity for discussion of foreign policy; it will allow Senators to grill him about his views on our engagements in the world. Whatever their motivation, though, the fact that they have come out in favor of Pompeo's nomination essentially means that he will be easily confirmed by the end of this week. "But if he takes over the State Department without the panel's recommendation, he'll be the first secretary of state to do so after such a tentative endorsement from Capitol Hill".
