Kensington Palace announced the news, tweeting: 'Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101hrs. Carole was also on hand to help with the school run as she was pictured collecting Prince George, four, from school.

It all started when Kate stepped outside the Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital looking perfectly relaxed after giving birth to her third child yesterday.

Meanwhile the new baby broke a new record upon his arrival earlier this week - he weighed the most out of William and Kate's babies, according to The Daily Mail.

Prince Charles, who will soon visit his new grandson, said today: 'We are both so pleased at the news.

Kensington Palace said the new prince's name will be announced in "due course". In Diana: Her True Story, Princess Diana revealed that her husband was disappointed when their second child was born after expecting it to be a girl, which he dismissed as a joke.

That means the Prince of Wales, his father Prince William, his brother Prince George and even his sister Princess Charlotte will all likely rule before he will.

The Duke of Cambridge also said that wife Kate and their new son were "in good form, luckily", adding that: "Sleeping's going reasonably well so far, so he's behaving himself which is good news". "Well it's amusing you should say that, it's a good name", the Prince replied. Before the rules were changed in 2012, male heirs took precedence.

Will and Kate also expressed their gratitude to hospital staff through the palace's Twitter account.
