Announcing Sridevi's name, jury head Shekhar Kapur said, "The best actress is Sridevi for Mom and I promise you it is not my relationship with her".

On Friday, Kapur, who announced the awards along with other jury members present at the Press Information Bureau here, was impressed with the scale of regional cinema. Director Rima Das' coming-of-age Assamese film Village Rockstars was named the best feature film for 2017. She essayed the role of a mother who bends every rule and goes the extra mile to ensure justice for her daughter.

"Director Ganguly, who has multiple National Film Awards in his kitty, said he was happy that "Nagar Kirtan" got its due". The film was not just Sridevi's last work but had also marked her golden jubilee in cinema.

The National Film Awards would be presented by Hon'ble President of India on May 3, 2018.

"It's time to celebrate her life and her achievements".

Though there is no one from the Malayalam film industry on the panel, Mollywood is hopeful of bagging some key awards this year.

Looking back both Meendum Kokila and Moondram Pirai (1982), which released the next year and was also remade in Hindi as Sadma (1983), these are two roles for which Sridevi more than deserved a National Award. Apart from bagging best actress award, Sridevi starrer Mom also won best background score which was given by Academy Award victor AR Rahman. She was always a perfectionist and it showed in all the 300 plus films she did. Pampally won best debut for "Sinjar". Actress Divya Dutta also won the best supporting actress award for Irada.

The jury, headed by filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, had handed over its recommendations to Information and Broadcasting minister Smriti Irani yesterday.
