The injured man, art dealer Todd Brassner, 67, later died.
Brassner was a friend of the late artist Andy Warhol and is mentioned several times in the legendary New Yorker's 1989 autobiography, The Andy Warhol Diaries.
The victim was a resident of the tower who died after being taken to hospital with critical injuries, fire officials said.
The president's middle son Eric Trump also tweeted about the fire, but he thanked the NY fire department for extinguishing the fire. Six firefighters were injured, none seriously, before the blaze was put out.
Donald Trump (seen in 2005 showing Trump World Tower) once battled an NYC bill that suggested requiring all residential buildings to install sprinklers.
New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro told CNN that no members of the Trump family were present during the fire, and that the building's higher floors do not have fire sprinklers.

Ant, meanwhile, has entered rehab after being charged with drink driving following a vehicle crash in London earlier in the month. A forthcoming TV show featuring Ant and Dec is reported to have been put on hold as it features the duo drinking alcohol.
Eric Trump stated the fire had actually remained in a cooling tower.
The Fire Commissioner stated that apartments on the upper floors of Trump Tower do not have fire sprinklers. He lived on the 50th floor of the 58-story building.
Mr Nigro noted that no member of the Trump family was in the 664-foot tower on Saturday.
The cause of Brassner's death was not immediately known. While there was a "considerable amount of smoke", they have not yet determined whether or not the smoke reached President Trump's unit.
Early talks for the proposed bill suggested that all residential buildings be required to install sprinklers, which irked developers, including Trump.
Trump's then-under construction Trump World Tower near the United Nations was also grandfathered in because he had submitted building permits before the local law was signed. "The building sure stood up quite wall".
About 200 firefighters and emergency medical service workers responded to the fire, Nigro said.
