Snapchat gets group video calls and Mentions feature for tagging friends

"Now you can video chat with up to 16 of your friends at one time", Snapchat said.

The social media platform said the aim of the move was to make the Chat section of the app "more fun". Now you can video chat with up to 16 of your friends at one time.

Users can start the group chat with just a tap on the video icon.

Simply enter an existing Group Chat, or create a new Group with the friends or family you'd like to see.

When a friend joins a group video chat, their name will light up and appear above the keyboard to confirm that they've joined the call.

Both Group Video Chat and Mentions will roll out to Snapchat users around the world over the next few weeks. And the best part of this group video calling is that you can use all the filters and lenses while on a call, which makes the conversation appealing. Then, tap on the video or phone icon to initiate the video or audio chat respectively.

Starting a group call in Snapchat is relatively straightforward.

The feature was spotted last month, and is officially rolling out with the new update.

The person tagged will be notified in the chat window that they've been mentioned in the user's Story.

The tagging feature will let users tell friends when they've posted a video they're featured in or promote a brand or celebrity by making it easier for others to add them.

Instagram, owned by Facebook, has been a relentless Borg-like foe to Snapchat, assimilating its best features and threatening its business survival.

Snapchat's Mention tagging perk for Stories (the disappearing image and video slideshows the app is known for) is now available to everyone.

Snapchat is a free download on the App Store.

Instead of having to scroll through Snap Maps to see where your friends are, Snapchat will start giving you updates that you can swipe through.
