"Some cruise lines have cancelled excursions using ferry services in Playa del Carmen", the travel alert ads, "Avoid tourist ferries travelling in the region until further notice, be vigilant and monitor local media (including social media)".

Asked about the new alert, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told ABC News that "we take our obligation to provide information to U.S. citizens seriously as evidenced by the clear, timely and reliable safety and security information we release worldwide".

"According to Government of Mexico statistics, the state experienced an increase in homicide rates compared to the same period in 2016", the warning for Quintana Roo states.

Samardzija said he went back to Playa del Carmen in January and he has "never felt unsafe" in the tourist destination.

"Mexico is by far the most popular sun destination among our clients but, of course, if someone is feeling uncomfortable travelling anywhere, we can always find them somewhere else to go", Wallace said. Local authorities found a second, undetonated device on another ferry on March 1.

"Continue to exercise a high degree of caution in Playa del Carmen", reads the statement. A day earlier, a shooting at a music festival in Playa del Carmen left three foreigners and two Mexicans dead.

USA government employees are now not allowed to travel to the area until further notice. Government employees are now prohibited from riding any tourist ferries in the area, and state and federal prosecutors are investigating the incidents.

The Canadian travel advisory for Playa del Carmen follows an alert from the USA embassy in Mexico advising Americans of a potential security threat for the area, located on the east coast about 90 minutes south of Cancun.

Still, Mexican officials on Thursday said that Playa del Carmen was safe despite the US security warning. The discovery occurred after an alleged cartel bomb blast ripped through the ferry, Barcos Caribe, on February 21, leaving 24 injured-including seven U.S.
