According to Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt Bill Lowe, Morton was shot after a 911 call came in from a home near downtown Clinton.
When police arrived at the home, Sgt. Lowe said a man fired at the responding officers from inside the residence.
Police said the shooter was found dead inside the home where the 911 call originated, WDAF reported. Officer Morton was an army veteran who served two tours and was a member of the Missouri Army National Guard. The trio of officers entered the home, intending to apprehend the suspect. Morton was killed in the shooting.
Officer Nicholas Kasper was treated and released from an area hospital.
The Clinton Police Department, SWAT teams and the Henry County Sheriff's Department subsequently engaged in a standoff with the suspect.
Authorities later found the suspect dead inside the home almost three hours after the shooting first broke out, according to the highway patrol.
