According to Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt Bill Lowe, Morton was shot after a 911 call came in from a home near downtown Clinton.

When police arrived at the home, Sgt. Lowe said a man fired at the responding officers from inside the residence.

Police said the shooter was found dead inside the home where the 911 call originated, WDAF reported. Officer Morton was an army veteran who served two tours and was a member of the Missouri Army National Guard. The trio of officers entered the home, intending to apprehend the suspect. Morton was killed in the shooting.

Officer Nicholas Kasper was treated and released from an area hospital.

The Clinton Police Department, SWAT teams and the Henry County Sheriff's Department subsequently engaged in a standoff with the suspect.

Authorities later found the suspect dead inside the home almost three hours after the shooting first broke out, according to the highway patrol.

"It's hard to put into words what you go through when you have an officer killed in the line of duty, and then to have it happen to a department after a short period of time, that's hard to wrap your head around", Lowe said Tuesday.

30 year old Morton was shot and killed, two other officers were injured. Officer Gary Michael was shot to death during a traffic stop last August.

"Certainly when Officer Michael was killed on August 6 of previous year it was just devastating to our community, and these things as we've said then and I'll say it again, they just don't happen in small towns like ours".

Lowe spoke about the bravery of the Clinton Police Department and the community.
