Four Northeast governors on Thursday announced a new coalition to work together to toughen gun laws in the wake of the Florida school shooting and congressional inaction.
Under the new coalition, a multi-state task force will be created to trace and intercept illegal guns in the region. "Now, Rhode Island has some of the nation's strongest gun laws, but our nation has some of the weakest gun laws".
The governors of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island are forming a coalition of like-minded states on gun control, hoping to make progress where they see the federal government has faltered.
Murphy noted how Democratic governors similarly banded together to form the United States Climate Alliance, agreeing to adhere to the terms of the Paris climate agreement despite President Donald Trump's move to withdraw the USA from the deal.
"This is a federal government that has gone backwards on this issue", Cuomo said. We have states with good intentions, with good laws. We can not sit back and let guns get into the hands of those who shouldn't have them, and we can not simply watch nearly daily tragedy occur.
