Others, Hartley said, didn't want Ramaphosa to assume the role as Mandela's No. 2 because he was a remainee and did not climb the ANC ranks in exile. He quickly spoke out against the corruption that had weakened the ANC, which has been in power since the end of white minority rule in 1994, and sped up the momentum that led to Zuma's resignation.

"We could have gotten more bolder action today, but I heard more of the same stuff", said Mmusi Maimane, head of the Democratic Alliance. We need to move forward as a country and eradicate corruption.

In his first State of the Nation address to parliament, Ramaphosa struck a note of optimism and outlined a vision to revive the country's economy. He led a weeks-long strike in the mining sector in 1987, making the union a potent force in the anti-apartheid struggle.

As a union organizer decades ago, Ramaphosa founded the National Union of Mineworkers, winning mineworkers benefits and better working conditions.

"We will change the way that boards are appointed so that only people with expertise‚ experience and integrity serve in these vital positions". South Africa's GDP is estimated to grow by around 1 percent this year. One initiative outlined was the announcement of a jobs summit, which would target some of the causes of the country's economic stagnation.

Ramaphosa therefore enters office with a heap of problems to sort out; something which might be easier said than done - a realisation that could come back to bite the Rand.

"We should put all the negativity that has dogged our country behind us because a new dawn is upon us and a wonderful dawn has arrived", Ramaphosa said.

'Threatening' package sent to embassy, Julian Assange claims
Lawyers representing Assange argued the warrant should be scrapped because he is no longer wanted for questioning in Sweden . Assange has spent the past five-and-a-half years holed up in Ecuador's embassy in London , as a result of the allegations.

"We are determined that expropriation without compensation should be implemented in a way that increases agricultural production, improves food security and ensure that the land is returned to those from whom it was taken under colonialism and apartheid".

Ramaphosa was sworn in on Thursday after being elected unopposed in parliament earlier in the day.

Lings however said the extensive speech suggested to him that Ramaphosa realises there a lot of work ahead, and is determined to get to it.

The story goes that he was so upset at not having been chosen by Nelson Mandela as his successor that he left politics and went into business.

He also faces steep challenges with national elections in 2019 as the ANC saw its worst showing at the polls in 2016, losing the key municipalities including Johannesburg and the capital, Pretoria. "A nation of free and equal people", Ramaphosa said. "We are going to make sure that we do not disappoint our people".

Ramaphosa was Mandela's chosen successor, but when he lost the race for deputy president to Mbeki, those plans were scrapped. They deny all allegations of wrongdoing.

Wednesday's operation was linked to the Vrede Farm scandal in which the three Guptas and government officials are accused of stealing money allocated to benefit poor farmers.
