The Treasury Department website added today, Wednesday, to its list of "Specially Designated Nationals" Haniyeh, who heads Hamas' Central Council, as well as terror groups Harakat Al-Sabireen, which operates out of Gaza and Judea and Samaria, and the Egyptian groups Hasm and Liwa Al-Thawra. In 2015, the Obama administration named two other Hamas figures, Yahya Sinwar and Muhammed Deif, as SDGTs.
The designation means that any assets Haniyeh may have in the USA are frozen, while "US persons"-which include permanent residents, as well as citizens-are prohibited from "any transactions" with the Hamas leader".
The move came amid rising tensions between the USA and the Palestinians, which boiled over in December after President TrumpDonald John TrumpStormy Daniels on statement denying Trump affair: "I do not know where it came from" Five Takeaways from Trump's State of the Union Van Jones: Trump "selling sweet-tasting candy with poison in it" MORE recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Unlike Meshaal, Haniya will remain in the Gaza Strip.
"This Zionist policy supported by the United States can not be confronted unless we ignite a new intifada", Haniya said.
It added that Haniyeh has "reportedly been involved in terrorist attacks against Israeli citizens" and accused Hamas of being "responsible for an estimated 17 American lives killed in terrorist attacks".
Trump administration mulls nationalizing 5G network, citing Chinese threat
The US government could build its own super-fast 5G network in a bid to counter security threats from China and other countries. For example, the company built two data centers in Zimbabwe after the country got a $98m loan from China Export-Import Bank.
And, on January 17, the U.S. government chose to cut more than half of its planned funding to the United Nations aid agency for Palestinian refugees - an institution that has been the lifeline to more than five million registered Palestinian refugees for over 70 years.
Born in 1963 in the Gaza Strip, he was exiled by Israel to southern Lebanon in 1992, along with scores of Hamas leaders, for about a year. The US has always been the most significant contributor to UNRWA.
The Forward reported that hundreds of Palestinians, including many senior Hamas leaders, attended his funeral procession Tuesday.
The other two groups-Liwa al-Thawra (Flag of the Revolution) and Harakat Sawa'd Misr (Arms of Egypt Movement, HASM)-are Egyptian, and some of the leadership in both groups was previously associated with the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.
