It was from talking with Tom Kelly a few times, and having him say that, as an opposing manager, the hitter he feared the most when facing the Mariners was Martinez.
The controversial PED duo of Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds still linger on the ballot, with 57.3% and 56.4%, respectively, and Curt Schilling rounded out those getting 50% or more with 51.2%. A career.318 hitter and 9-time All-Star, Guerrero becomes the third Dominican Republic-born player to be elected to the Hall (Juan Marichal and Pedro Martinez are the others). Thome is eighth on the all-time home run list with 612, while Jones was the best switch hitter of his era, averaging 32 home runs and 107 RBIs with a.961 OPS during an eight-year span from 1996-2003.
Their detractors might yet change their minds, which frequently does happen as worthy candidates get second and third looks in their final year. The nine-time All-Star slugger played half his career with the Montreal Expos. Guerrero received 92.9 percent, Thome 89.8 percent and Hoffman 79.9 percent.
Hoffman retired in 2010 as the career saves leader, with 601; only Mariano Rivera has passed him since.
He was one of four players elected to the Hall of Fame Wednesday night. As Thome is set to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this July, many fans will remember him for being a class act on and off the field.
In the age of baseball analytics, there's still room in the Hall of Fame for big, round numbers you can count on. It didn't deliver a World Series championship the way Morris' memorable 10-inning shutout of the Braves had capped his single season with the Twins in 1991, but it marked the signature moment of Thome's successful two-year stint in Minnesota.
Former White Sox slugger Jim Thome has been honored for his storied career.
Basketball: Joel Embiid surprise NBA All Star starter; reserves to be named
Following last night's post-game interview, fans of "The Process" bombarded Rihanna's IG with comments about Embiid . The Eastern Conference and Western Conference starters for the 67th NBA All-Star Game were revealed tonight on TNT .
For his part, Ginsburg told the Glenn Clark radio show that, while Jones had a great career, he would hve been more supportive of Jones in his second year of eligibility, not the first. He finished his career with over 2,500 hits and 449 career home runs.
The same is true of Clemens, who won a record seven Cy Young Awards as top pitcher with 354 win, a 3.12 earned-run-average and 4,672 strikeouts in 24 seasons.
I sincerely hope Clemens and Bonds break the 75 percent barrier before their time is up on the ballot.
Andruw Jones was the most interesting case at the bottom of the ballot, as he polled right around the 5 percent cutoff line in public voting tabulated by Ryan Thibodaux.
They still have a chance to make a surge next year, because the ballot will not be almost so crowded with strong candidates.
I voted for Martinez for the first time on this ballot.
"Carlos Lee received a vote". Regardless of what you call him... you can now begin the sentence with Hall-of-Famer.
