Ahead of the strike, health ministry issued advisory to medical institutions to ensure that all steps were taken to provide emergency services to the masses.

According to the striking doctors, they were observing the "black day" against the proposed bill allowing practitioners of alternative medicines, such as homoeopathy and ayurveda to practice allopathy after going through a "bridge course". Therefore, about 3 lakh doctors from the private and government hospital of the country will be on strike today.

OPDs in private hospitals will not work between 6 a.m.to 6 p.m. tomorrow to protest against the "undemocratic, anti-poor, non-representative and anti-federal" bill, the IMA said, adding that emergency and critical care services are exempted from the protest.

While the doctors at the state-run medical colleges chose to keep away from the Out Patient Department for an hour from 8-9 a.m. and at the state-run hospitals from 9-10 a.m., in many private hospitals the protests would continue till 6 p.m. However, the doctors were wearing black bands as a mark of protest.

Tandon also said: "The current MCI is a democratically elected body where we have almost 80 percent elected members and 20 percent nominated by the government".

Palestinian Presidency Calls US Veto a Mockery of the International Community
The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution against recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital city. The 14 other countries on the Security Council voted in favor, but US Ambassador Nikki Haley exercised the American veto.

Bill tabled in the Lok Sabha is anti-people and anti-patient, said Roy Abraham Kallivayalil, secretary general of the World Psychiatric Association.

"We want the central government to reconsider the National Medical Commission Bill".

Meanwhile, the All India Medical Students' Association too has joined the strike call of IMA and has called for a student strike on Tuesday. "85 per cent Government fixed fees in private Medical Colleges", said the statement.

He said the NMC will "cripple" the functioning of the medical profession by making it completely answerable to the bureaucracy and non-medical administrators. For instance, colleges will be allowed to start post-graduate courses and increase intake of students all on their own - without seeking permission from the NMC.
