The California Highway Patrol officer killed in the crash on 880 was identified as Andrew Camilleri, 33. The suspect is now in the hospital being treated for his injuries. The officer in the driver's seat, Jonathan Velasquez, suffered minor injuries.

Officers responded shortly before midnight to reports of a collision in the southbound lanes of Interstate-880 just north of Highway 92 involving a red auto and a CHP vehicle, Bay Area television station KPIX reported. According to a post on Twitter, CHP says they suspect the driver was impaired while driving.

CHP officials did not provide details of the injuries or the cause of the collision.

"This needs to stop", Sanchez said, adding that he is not only brokenhearted about Camilleri's death, but also angry. Camilleri is survived by his wife, Rosanna; a daughter and two sons.

The 22-year-old suspect is believed to have been drunk, under the influence of drugs and coming home from a party, according to CHP.

CHP affirmed Monday morning that one of the officers had passed on of his wounds.

He was married with three kids, CHP said in a press conference.

Banners at the Capitol will be flown at half-staff in the fallen officer's respect, as indicated by an announcement from Gov. "We join his family, friends and the entire California Highway Patrol in mourning his death and in honoring his sacrifice".

A driver drifted off the road from the freeway and hit the right rear part of the CHP cruiser.
