Elderly couple arrested in Nebraska with over 60 pounds of marijuana

Deputies found bags of weed in boxes inside the pickup topper. The couple explained during the stop they were traveling from their hometown of Clearlake Oaks, California, and were planning to end up in Vermont. Barbara was not arrested, but Patrick was.

"They said the marijuana was for Christmas presents", Lt. Paul Vrbka told the York News-Times. The couple told police that they were transporting "Christmas presents".

Christmas may be a little less mellow for a few households this year as a California duo was arrested in Nebraska and charged with felony drug possession.

The Jirons were taken in on charges including possession with the intent to distribute, according to the newspaper.

Don't drive around 60 pounds worth of marijuana in a state where it's illegal. The state, like many in the USA, has not decriminalized marijuana for either medical or recreational use. When questioned about the odor, the driver confessed to possessing contraband and consented to a search of his truck, leading authorities to the Jirons' 60-lb stash. On July 1, Nevada joined seven other states allowing recreational marijuana use and became the first of four states that voted to legalize recreational sales in November's election to allow dispensaries to sell cannabis for recreational use to anyone over 21. Those who are qualified for medical marijuana have more leeway, but can still possess just eight ounces of weed at one time.
