The epicentre was located 82 kilometres east-northeast of the town of Tadine in the country's Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia, which lies in the South Pacific's Ring of Fire.
Two small waves have been detected in New Caledonia and Vanuatu following a 7.0 magnitude natural disaster that struck east of the Loyalty Islands.
There has been a cluster of quakes in the area between magitude 6.4 and 7 in the past 24 hours.
The quake struck the Loyalty Islands on Monday about 11.45am (NZT) at a depth of about 25km.

The service warned that "hazardous tsunami waves" were possible for some coasts, particularly Australia, some 2000 miles distant. At the time of agency said small tsunami waves were observed in New Caledonia perhaps, the danger had largely passed away.
"Tsunami waves reaching 0.3 to 1 metres above the tide level are possible for some coasts of New Caledonia".
