Thornton police spokesman Victor Avila said Thursday that 47-year-old Scott Ostrem was arrested without incident after a brief chase that started near an apartment about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the Walmart store. Thornton police said a nationwide extradition homicide warrant has been issued for the 47-year-old Ostrem.
A police officer told reporters that not much is now known about the shooting or the culprit, who exited the store and has not been found.
Coroner Monica Broncucia-Jordan said Thursday that 52-year-old Pamela Marques, 66-year-old Carlos Moreno, and 26-year-old Victor Vasquez died in the shooting.
Police say a man suspected of fatally shooting three people inside a suburban Denver Walmart tried to flee officers in his auto but was blocked by traffic.
According to Colorado court records, while Ostrem declared bankruptcy in 2015, he does not have a lengthy criminal record.
Tropical Storm Philippe To Slam Cuba, Florida With Heavy Rainfall
The storm was forecast to dump heavy rains over El Salvador, southern Guatemala and southern Honduras, threatening flash floods. Tropical Storm Watches are in effect, as the brunt of the storm will stay off shore.
This meant they couldn't send a Walmart employee into the store to immediately review surveillance footage, since police still had to secure the scene and make sure it was safe. Authorities used security video to help identify the suspect. Avila said there was no indication the shooting was an act of terrorism and no one had claimed responsibility. Two men were shot and died and a woman who was also shot was taken to the hospital and died soon afterwards.
"It took a while because it was so many people, it was mass chaos in there", Avila said.
Police are asking anyone with information about Ostrem's whereabouts to come contact authorities.
"The employees started screaming".
An hour later, the Thornton Police Department tweeted, "At this time this is not an active shooter".
