A day after Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) chief Bimal Gurung narrowly escaped from an encounter near Darjeeling on Friday that claimed the life of a police officer, the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Righs (WBCPCR) issued a fresh summon to the GJM supremo for allegedly abusing child rights during the 104-day strike for Gorkhaland statehood.

Additional director general (law and order) Anuj Sharma told reporters in Kolkata that the police had specific information that Gurung and the group loyal to him were hiding near Patlebas, a stronghold of the GJM chief.

"One sub-inspector, Amitabha Mullick, has been shot dead; and at least three others have been injured".

Few days back Gurung had told his supporters that he will appear before them on October 30. While the Gurung-led faction, pointed fingers at the police, the leader of the other GJM faction, Binay Tamang, said it is likely that the houses, with nobody inside at the time of the fire, were set ablaze by Gurung's supporters to destroy evidence of wrongdoing. “We will not allow this to happen at any cost, even if we have to make sacrifices, ” he said.

Sharma said, during the clashes, Gurung and his close associates fled to the neighbouring state of Sikkim. Intelligence sources say that Gurung is not being able to come to terms with the winds of change in his party. "It is sending police personnel who do not have proper training to capture Gurung", Ghosh said. Thulung is wanted by Darjeeling Police and Assam Police in an arms case. The weapons unearthed show links with the Maoists.

The region's Nepali-speaking Gorkha community has always been holding protests demanding a separate Gorkhaland state within India to protect their Himalayan culture.

Tamang on Friday met Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat Nabanna.
