For the first time in history, the United States on Monday established an official, permanent military base in Israel: an air defense base in the heart of the Negev desert.
The base, created to be an independent facility but co-located at the Israel Defense Forces Air Defense School, will house dozens of US soldiers, though its function is mostly symbolic as it falls under the authority of Israel military directives and will not result in any operational changes, the Associated Press reports. -Gen Zvika Haimovitch, head of the IDF's Aerial Defense Division, stated on Monday.
"It's nothing short of historic", he said.
Israel and the United States remain concerned that Iran has continued to work on both its nuclear program as well as its ballistic missile program despite global criticism.
"As part of the United States' continued commitment to Israel, on September 18, senior leaders from the U.S. military participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony... to commemorate the opening of a new building on an Israeli Air Force base", said Meghan Henderson, deputy director of EUCOM's Media Operations Division.
The base, which has been two years in the making, will help the IAF and the USA task force "improve detection, interception and deployment in aerial defense, while strengthening cooperation". "It won't get us to 100 percent, but it will get us much closer to achieving important things during war". Exact sizes aren't clear, but estimates are that several dozen USA soldiers will remain at the base.

Panic has gripped scores of border residents living in villages close to the global border of R.S. He is a native of Vidya Bhawan Naraypur village in Balia district of Uttar Pradesh.
"This symbolizes the strong bond that exists between the United States and Israel", Maj.
The base, Haimovitch stated, "represents the long-standing partnership, the strategic commitment between the armies and the militaries of our countries" and "adds another layer to the security of the State of Israel in defending the threats of rocket or missile fire".
The facility will house dozens of US soldiers stationed there.
One of the main purposes of the USA presence in the country has to do with missile defense systems, according to Military.com. "And now with the opening of this site, these crucial interactions will happen every day".
Haimovitch noted that in addition to the establishment of the USA base on Monday, Israel's collaboration with the Americans on air defense would again be seen in a few months, when the two militaries launch the Juniper Cobra exercise in February. "It was instead shot down by one Patriot missile that was sacked by Israeli air defence soldiers". The David's Sling missile defense system is created to intercept tactical ballistic missiles, medium- to long-range rockets, as well as cruise missiles fired at ranges between 40 to 300km.
Earlier this year, Israel intercepted another drone that strayed into the Golan airspace from neighboring Syria.
