Meanwhile, Justin Rose finished the second round in 68 to leave him seven under overall and joint 12th on the leader board, with fellow Englishman Paul Casey one shot behind in 22nd place.
The Victorian-born World No. 22 remained in command atop of the board for a third day running in managing five birdies including an important "4" at the last and dropping just two shots on the Conway Farms course.
The 33-year-old regained the stroke with a ideal 20-foot putt at the fifth, although he then missed from four feet for par at the seventh before a nice up-and-down at the par-five next got him back under the card for the day.
"When you see the scores that were put up earlier, that's what you're comparing yourself to and I thought the golf course played a little too hard to really think a good score would be seven or eight-under in the afternoon", Spieth said.
'The game's feeling really good. Very easy to throw a mediocre round in there. "But probably more importantly I putted well, I made the opportunities that I gave myself".
Leishman shared the 54-hole lead at the Dell Technologies Championship TPC Boston two weeks ago with Justin Thomas, who surged ahead in the final round to win the event.

"And last week I showed that a couple of shots going in the back nine is not enough".
"One of those eagles was a chip-in from 30 feet from beyond the green at the par-five 14th".
Fowler also produced back-nine fireworks, playing a five-hole stretch from the 13th in five-under, and the trio have daylight on the chasing pack which is headed by Ben Coley's tip Patrick Cantlay (22/1) on 10-under. His goal is to get into the top five going into the final event at the Tour Championship.
World number 22 Leishman is seeking his third victory on the PGA Tour.
Leishman started the day with a three-shot lead.
Day, seeking his first victory in more than a year, carded a 65 at the Conway Farms Golf Club in IL, benefiting from what he called a "lucky" hole-in-one at the 188-yard par-three 17th hole.
On the seventh hole, Leishman chipped in beautifully before rolling the ball in on the long green for a birdie, before repeating the trick, putting in from beyond the fringe on the eighth.
