There is still the threat of of tropical storm force winds, flooding rains and tornadoes, even though the storm is expected to track well to the west of the state.
Storm surge doesn't just come from the ocean.
Pay attention when watches or warnings are issued for your area
President Donald Trump has declared a major disaster in the state of Florida, making federal aid available to people affected by Hurricane Irma in nine counties already hit by the storm. According to the National Hurricane Center, surges cause more USA deaths than any other hurricane-related event.
Irma tied Florida Keys (1935), Gilbert (1988), and Wilma (2005) for the second strongest maximum winds of all-time for an Atlantic hurricane when it topped out at 185 miles per hour.
Maximum sustained winds had decreased to 136.8kmh as of 2am local time, with Irma projected to become a tropical storm as it moved into northern Florida or southern Georgia later yesterday. "It's awful what we saw". Florida Gov. Rick Scott said it "will cover your house". Officials warned of potential scattered power outages and minor localized flooding. And they're likely to see a large storm surge there, still these high winds, an area that, you know, hasn't - I mean, no one can prepare for a hurricane quite like that. No one, and we mean no one, has more data on these storms than the National Hurricane Center, which is where News19 and other reputable TV & radio stations and digital media sites get their information on the storm's path.
As a result, ratings may be delayed for a few days, depending on how soon the data center can reopen and staff can return to work.
The storm led to power outages across the state, with Florida Power & Light reporting that over 2.1 million customers are without power. Meanwhile, heavy equipment crews have begun clearing away road and other debris in Florida as cleanup crews fan out with chain saws to remove downed trees and begin taking stock of the extent of the damage.
