The Iowa Army National Guard is joining the flood recovery effort in Houston.

Charles Christianson, a Guard helicopter pilot from Russellville, deployed to Sugar Land, Texas, on Tuesday.

The guardsmen will conduct search and rescue operations, as well as other mission requirements as needed.

The Arkansas National Guard is made up of about 9,000 soldiers, with roughly 7,000 Army guardsmen and 2,000 Air Force guardsman, Phillips said. "Guardsmen will be leaving tomorrow, and the deployment could extend up to 30 days".

Right now Harvey has weakened to a tropical storm and will continue to weaken while it is over land. - no local impacts . Occasional wind gusts over 40 miles per hour will be there, but unless they're stronger, wind damage is not expected.

The eleven soldiers who are being deployed with the Chinooks come from Iowa Guard units in Davenport, Johnston and Boone.

"I am glad that Minnesota will be able to assist the victims of the bad tragedy in Texas, with 11 Minnesota National Guard soldiers accompanying two Chinook helicopters to join in relief efforts", Dayton said in a statement.

The 10 Pennsylvania National Guard soldiers join six airmen who deployed earlier this week.

"For the people that need that, that's how they're staying alive, no food, no water", said Brian Hurst, Liberty's Fire Chief. The National Guard took over a private airport in Brookshire, where they are preparing 8,000 pounds of supplies.
