Osteen's megachurch can seat around 17,000 people - three times the capacity of George R. Brown Convention Center, where more than 9,000 people stayed the night (the convention center's official capacity is 5,000).

"Once they filled up, they never dreamed that we'd have this many displaced people, (and) they asked us to become a shelter".
Joel Osteen's huge Houston church is open to those needing shelter and volunteers are delivering and sorting donations for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey's devastating impact. "Lakewood will be a value to the community in the aftermath of this storm". "So, there was a safety issue for the first day or two", he said. "If we didn't have our flood gates out back here, it was within one foot".

It seems as though many people may have taken Lakewood Church's original post about flooding out of context. He said the firestorm may have "helped us to step up some things" to prepare for evacuees.
US Coast Guard Lt. Mike Hart said the coast guard is receiving up to 1,000 calls per hour from people needing to be rescued. The church's message directed people to other shelters in the area though some on social media questioned how Lakewood was flooded if the surrounding neighborhood was not.
