This meant that four ships which were set to dock over the weekend were unable to get to Galveston, and even if they had been able to, they would have just been unloading their passengers into a hurricane.
"Given the severity and projected path of the storm along with potential challenges guests may encounter attempting to travel back to Galveston independently, we are strongly encouraging them to remain on board as we intend to return the ships to Galveston as soon as feasible", the company said in an email.
The Carnival Breeze ship still remains in Cozumel, Mexico, and will return to Galveston on Sunday, while the Royal Caribbean's Liberty of Seas cruise ship left Cozumel on Friday and is scheduled to reach Galveston on Sunday. Earlier today, Harvey strengthened to become a Category 3 level storm. "Our intention is to keep with our original schedule for our return to Galveston on Sunday".
"Guests who wish to terminate their cruise at that point and disembark in New Orleans may do so", de la Huerta said in statement. "Gratuities will also be adjusted to reflect the shortened duration". Guests who sail will receive a pro-rated refund of their cruise fare for missed days and refund of any pre-purchased Carnival Adventures for canceled ports.
