Announced today, Google's Express delivery service will partner with Walmart, allowing customers to buy items from the retailer through the service's website or app, or via the Google Home smart speaker using voice commands.
If using your voice you can order one product at a time, or you can add lots of products to your cart that way and complete the purchase later using the app. Walmart also integrated its Easy Reorder feature into Google Express allowing for simple repeat purchases.
Walmart's ecommerce platform is also banking on a key advantage of Amazon's Prime subscription: no annual membership fee is required with the added benefit of free and speedy deliveries on all orders above $35.
Indeed, it's hard not to see today's announcement from Google and United States shopping giant Walmart in terms of Amazon's growing ambitions. While Google Home has always been on the point when it comes to answering queries, it is Amazon's Echo that dominates the shopping arena.
Samsung confirms plans to launch a smart speaker
Samsung mobile's CTO previously said it will expand availability of the virtual assistant to other devices at a later date. Now the electronics giant is rolling Bixby out to new regions including the UK, Australia, Canada and South Africa.
Walmart is all set to renew its rivalry with Amazon, this time with Google on its side.
"The move is an intelligent and natural joint venture for both Walmart and Google, in our opinion, given that Amazon's Alexa was more/less closed off to other retailers", Grom said. The Walmart connection follows previous store partnerships with Costco, Target, and Whole Foods, which, coincidentally, is being acquired by Amazon for $13.7 billion.
The alliance would let Walmart customers link their accounts to Google, giving the search giant predictive information for what might be bought next. Easy Reorder, introduced earlier this year, registers in-store and online purchases and saves them to a shopper's purchase history.
Walmart says it will be tapping its 4,700 US stores and its fulfillment network next year to offer more kinds of customer experiences using voice shopping. But Walmart is coming up with something new, as soon as you meet the merchant's minimum purchase option, the items will be delivered to your home for free. "We know this means being compared side-by-side with other retailers, and we think that's the way it should be", Lore wrote in a corporate blog post.
