Somerville College's Andrew Warren, 56, and Professor Wyndham Lathem, 42, are accused of killing Trenton Cornell-Duranleau in the academic's Chicago apartment.
Cornell-Duranleau, a hairstylist who was in a relationship with Lathem, was found dead inside Lathem's apartment on July 27.
The suspects handed themselves in separately eight days later in California, after being subjects of a nationwide manhunt, during which they had travelled across the country in a rental vehicle, police said.
Lathem also sent a video message to family members and friends after the killing, according to police, allegedly apologizing for his involvement in the crime.
Lathem and Warren were scheduled to appear in bond court at 1 p.m.
The body was discovered at around 8.30pm on July 27 after the building's front desk received an anonymous call that a crime had taken place on the tenth floor.
Cornell-Duranleau was stabbed 70 times, and with such force that his head was almost decapitated.

Lathem has been fired from Northwestern University, the school said.
The men rented a vehicle and left an anonymous cash donation of $5,610 to the Howard Brown Health Center in Cornell-Duranleau's name before driving to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, authorities allege.
Warren came to the apartment, and Lathem entered the bedroom where Cornell-Duranleau was sleeping while Warren stood in the doorway.
"What I can tell you is it was not domestic in nature, like a husband-wife or boyfriend-boyfriend or a love triangle", Deenihan said Sunday.
The Cook County medical examiner's office on Friday released the findings in the death of Trenton Cornell-Duranleau. "It was a little bit more dark and disturbing as far as I'm concerned". According to Anthony Guglielmi, chief spokesman for the Chicago police, Lathem said in the video that he made "the biggest mistake of his life", reported the Chicago Tribune.
Wyndham Lathem, left, and Andrew Warren on August 19. As Lathem continued to stab his boyfriend, Warren left the room and returned with two kitchen knives, she said.
Cornell-Duranleau, a 26-year-old hair stylist, had been asleep in Lathem's condo when the professor let Warren in, according to Toller's account.
