Clashes broke out in the Moscow Regional Court on Tuesday, leaving three defendants dead and five others wounded, officials said.

Russia's Investigative Committee said the incident happened when five suspects who were handcuffed were being led by a couple of the security guards into an elevator at the courthouse.

At least three people have been killed and two wounded in a shootout at a court in Moscow, Russian news agencies said.

A bailiff and armed guard also suffered bullet wounds in the attack, lawyer Sofia Rubasskaya, who was in the building at the time, told TASS. On the third floor of the courtroom defendants encountered officers of the National Guard.

Three gang member suspects have been killed during an escape attempt in a court in Moscow, Russia. "They are in critical condition", the source said adding that both of them sustained gun wounds.

Information about the death of the fourth member of the GTA gang has not been confirmed by the authorities yet.

When the drivers left their cars, the gang, totaling nine members, would shoot them dead, investigators said.

The prosecutor's office for the Moscow region said it was looking into the incident to see if the guards had violated the procedure for escorting defendants. "They have gunshot wounds of medium degree of gravity", she said.

The suspects in the hearing, all from Central Asia, are known as the GTA, or Grand Theft Auto, gang, named after the video game franchise.

The regional court was evacuated for about an hour before operations resumed in the building.

Russian television reported Tuesday that the leader of the gang was "radicalised" and had fought alongside the Islamic State jihadist group.
