The Kenyan captain missed Spurs' 3-0 defeat against Manchester City on Saturday and speaking afterwards coach Mauricio Pochettino admitted that he could as well miss the season opener against the promoted side.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino later confirmed in the post-match press conference that although the 26-year-old was present at the game, he had picked up a knee injury in last week's 4-2 victory over Paris Saint-Germain and was subsequently left out of the match day squad.

"I think it is a good thing many clubs are talking about our players".

"I like to show respect to people that behave another way, only I expect the same from people that compete with us".

"For different clubs who have spent a lot of money, the expectation and pressure is massive".

Tottenham return to the U.K shortly, ahead of a final mouth-watering pre-season fixture against Champions League finalists and Italian champions Juventus at Wembley next Sunday.

Stating that he respects the opinions of anyone who has something to say about his side, Pochettino went on to add; "My job is to be focused on my players and my team and try to work together with our board, our fans, everything that is involved with the club".

"It's true you want to win but Manchester City was better than us, showed better quality".

"He is an important player for us and the idea is not to sell him".

"The reality is we want to win in two weeks when we start the Premier League against Newcastle".

"After the last two seasons, we were the best, if we compare the last two seasons with other teams we were the best".

Nobody, after all, wants to give United an easy transfer window if they can help it.
