Giving blood takes less than one hour and each donation can save three lives.
According to a release, there has been a severe decline in donations in the weeks before the Fourth of July holiday.
At Bonfils Blood Center in Denver, staff aim to have a four-day supply of all blood types on hand at all times in case of emergencies. The current supply of O-negative blood, the universal blood type, sits at about two days.
In this month alone, the agency is 5,700 donations short and expect the deficits to continue throughout August. Also, platelet donations are in high demand. "In order to ensure sufficient blood supply to treat patients, including those with cancer and other life-threatening diseases, patients undergoing organ transplants, and trauma victims, it is crucial that donors come out and donate as often as possible, especially during the summer".

Volunteers must be 18 years old or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. 10 a.m.to 3 p.m. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 23 and younger, and donors who are 16 and 17 must have signed UBS form/permission from a parent or guardian.
