Now on the cusp of his 10 championship, Chestnut has promised to annihilate the all-star panel of the world's best competitive eaters, but he singled out his nemesis Stonie for particular scorn.

What better way to celebrate America's independence than with hot dogs.

Chestnut set the previous record at 70 a year ago.

Nothing says Fourth of July like the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest! Last year, Chestnut dominated and put down 17 more hot dogs than Stonie, setting the competition record with 70 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

"I'm really happy I got this win", Chestnut said, gripping the Mustard Belt, "I slowed down way more more than I wanted to, I definitely have room for more".

What's the record for hot dogs eaten?

Tuesday's battle was the fourth involving Chestnut and Stonie, who became storied rivals when the upstart Stonie ended Chestnut's eight-year hot-dog reign in 2015 by edging him out on a count of 62 to 60. The champions of both the men's and women's division will take home $10,000.

Sudo ate 41 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. Second place Michelle Lesco of Tucson, Ariz., ate 32 dogs.

A little scuffle in front of the hot dog eating contest, it seems.

Nine-time champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut is defending his title Tuesday, The Associated Press reported. Chestnut downed 70 franks and buns in 10 minutes previous year, topping his own Coney Island record. Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas holds the women's record at 45 franks.

Now, more than 35,000 people witness the eating event live and even more watch as it is televised on ESPN as well.
