Although the series' return still does not have the official green light at HBO, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Academy Award victor Mahershala Ali is in talks to lead True Detective season three.

We've all been so distracted by politics for the past year that we haven't had time for True Detective memes, once a staple of life online.

Submit your Newswire tips here. Season 2 was. A mixed bag, starring an expanded ensemble including Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch in an LA based mystery that felt more pretentious, than transcendent.

Authorities: Texas mom left 2 kids in hot vehicle as punishment
A mother has been charged over the deaths of her two young children after she locked them in a vehicle , and left them there. At first, authorities say that the suspect told them that she was folding laundry while her children were outside playing.

Still, as Deadline noted on Friday, True Detective has not received the formal green light for a third season. If Ali is indeed selected to lead the cast, it'll be a good hint that things are back on track. Veteran showrunner David Milch (Deadwood) has teamed up with True D creator Nic Pizzolatto to figure out how to tackle a third season of the anthology series.

While they have remained mum so far this year, HBO execs have previously stated that the network was interested in a third season of True Detective, but they were waiting for Pizzolatto to come up with a new "take" for the season. We're keeping our fingers crossed that this deal works out! He certainly showed his talent for intensity on Luke Cage, where he played the unpredictable and powerful Cottonmouth. After massive success with both fans and critics during the initial season, the second season failed to impress either, with convoluted storylines, excessively twisted plots, and an unsatisfying ending for most, among other issues. Who do you want to see star alongside Ali?

You can stream past episodes of True Detective on HBO Go.
