Spanish state prosecutor accuses Jose Mourinho of tax fraud

25 June, 2017

Prosecutors in Spain have targeted another world soccer icon for tax fraud, this time Manchester United Coach Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United manager José Mourinho has denied a claim by Spanish prosecutors that he defrauded €3.3 million (£2.9 million) in tax while manager of Real Madrid.

Mourinho, who has won 25 trophies with clubs in Portugal, Italy, Spain and England, managed Real from 2010 and 2013, winning the Spanish league and the Super Cup in 2012 and the Copa del Rey in 2011.

He will appear in court at the end of July to defend himself, although there is no formal charge at this stage.

Angel Di Maria agreed to a deal with Spain's state prosecutor on Wednesday in which the former Real Madrid forward admitted to two counts of tax fraud of nearly 1.3 million euros ($1.4 million) in exchange for a lighter sentence.

Di Maria initially agreed in February of this year to pay 1.45 million euros.

Google Will Soon Stop Scanning Your Email to Personalize Ads
Privacy activists have long complained that the scanning of email contents amounts to unwarranted "eavesdropping" on users. Gmail is free, in part because Google has always scanned the contents of users' inboxes in order to serve targeted ads.

A spokesperson for Mourinho's current employer said: 'José Mourinho has not received any notification with regards to the news published today.

Real's president Florentino Perez also insisted earlier this week that no offer had been made to the club for the 32-year old, hence he remains a Madrid player.

But tax authorities later found that some of the information presented in that settlement was incorrect, the prosecutors said.

The accusations against Mourinho come just a week after Spanish authorities accused Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo of tax fraud, worth £12.9 million.

A prosecutor said that Mourinho did not declare income from use of his image rights in order to gain an "illicit benefit".

Messi and his father were given 21-month sentences for three counts of tax fraud but did not go to prison, while Mascherano was given a one-year sentence for tax evasion. The Spanish Supreme Court found Lionel Messi guilty of similar crimes a year ago. In Spain, sentences of under two-years are often suspended if the convicted person has no previous criminal record.
