The exercise involving two of South Korea's F-15K fighter jets and the B-1Bs is "part of a scheduled exercise", the South Korean air force official said during a press briefing.

Joint training is a regular event between the two militaries, Kim said. He was held for almost a year-and-a-half in North Korea before being sent home in a coma last week.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Tuesday offered few details about how the United States plans to respond to Warmbier's death, promising only that the U.S. will "continue to apply economic and political pressure" to change North Korea's behavior.

The US military said the bombers conducted two separate drills with the Japanese and South Korean air forces.

A North Korean man defected to South Korea by crossing the border, the South Korean army said. Pyongyang has repeatedly tested missiles potentially capable of delivering nuclear warheads and Kim's threats against South Korea, Japan and the USA have grown increasingly bellicose. But U.S. forces would face much more deadly opposition in an assault on the North Korean capital. Analysts say his death will likely cast a shadow on relations between the USA and North Korea and compound efforts by South Korea's new liberal president, Moon Jae-in, to improve ties with the North.

No longer out of bounds: Trump allies question Mueller probe
And since Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the investigation, Rosenstein is acting in that capacity. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, however, who would be the one doing the firing, put the rumors to bed Tuesday.

Kim Jong-un's alert status has intensified after more information related to secret unit designated by the US and South Korea has arrived in North Korea.

They agreed to closely cooperate to achieve the joint goal of denuclearizing the North and mobilize every possible means to that end, including sanctions and dialogue through bilateral or trilateral coordination involving the U.S.

"We strongly condemn the North's series of drone provocations and urge it to stop all such provocations immediately", Jeon said, vowing "strong retaliation" against any further actions by Pyongyang.

Otto Warmbier, 22, died at a hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio on Monday, a week after being released from North Korea in a coma.
