Comey said he felt uncomfortable with the nature of his personal meetings with Trump, including a private dinner at the White House.

And Trump might comment further in a scheduled Rose Garden 2:45 p.m. news conference with the president of Romania, who is visiting the White House and participating in a bilateral meeting.

Trump officially took questions from reporters for the first time in three weeks, standing next to Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

Trump demurred when asked whether tapes of his talks with Comey actually exist.

"Well, I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the very near future", Trump said. The House intelligence committee is seeking any tapes of the conversations.

Trump's team, led by his personal lawyer, Marc E. Kasowitz, on Friday was preparing a counterattack on Comey based in part on his admission that he arranged the leak of his account of the conversation with Trump in which he says the president suggested the FBI halt its investigation into Flynn. "He's a leaker", Trump said of Comey.

"I didn't say that", Trump insisted Friday, before heading to his New Jersey golf club in Bedminster where he will spend the weekend. "I look forward to working with you to deepen the ties of both commerce and culture between our two countries", The US President added. "I'm not going to say, 'I want you to pledge allegiance'".

Slight Chance Of Showers Later, But Sunny & Warm Until Then
Early Friday morning there will be a chance for scattered showers and possibly a thunderstorm. West southwest wind 5 to 10 miles per hour becoming light south after midnight.

"I hardly know the man".

On Thursday, Democrats on the House Armed Services Committee had called on Trump to declare his support for Article Five.

Trump's declaration came during a question as to whether the USA would honor its treaty obligation if Russian Federation attacked a NATO member.

A day after he had allowed surrogates to respond for him, Trump took to Twitter on Friday morning to attack Comey directly, writing: "Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication ... and WOW, Comey is a leaker!" "But we want to get back to running our great country", Trump said. He also said Trump wanted him to back off on the FBI investigation of his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

Senior aides to Trump had tried to get a statement of explicit support for Article 5 in the president's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation speech but it was not included, a senior administration official said.

Trump's private attorney, Marc Kasowitz, seized on the admission, casting the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director as one of the "leakers" set on undermining the Trump administration. After reporters pressed again, Trump said he would disclose that "in a very short period of time".

But Comey's testimony about the President has darkened the clouds hanging over the White House.
