ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting the New England Patriots and wide receiver Julian Edelman have agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension.

The 31-year-old Edelman is fresh from his second 1,000-plus yard season in nine years with the Patriots.

Edelman will enter the final deal of the four-year, $17 million contract that he signed in 2014. Ultimately, Edelman can make up to $15 million in the two years and is now signed through 2019.

Edelman has been Brady's most frequent target over the last four years, reeling in 356 receptions for 3,826 yards and 20 touchdowns in that span. The contract extension likely will be signed in the next day or two, according to the report. During the 2016 season he contributed three touchdowns, bringing his career total to 24.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is a leader on the field and, when it comes to taking less money than he's worth, off it, too.

Julian Edelman was scheduled to be a free agent after this season, but it appears that won't be the case. He's not the most skilled player on the New England roster, but Edelman is one of the more impactful players. The Patriots are looking to get that situation all taken care of before Edelman can even sniff free agency.
