If Trump did tape the conversation, Toobin noted it could either prove Trump's innocence or guilt and that the tapes should be released to prove more than a "he said, he said" statement.

The information had come from a USA ally, which was later revealed by U.S. media to be Israel. The White House quickly denied the report, saying in a statement it was "not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey".

Congressional investigators are expected to seek copies of any notes taken during the meeting, a congressional source said. Mr Nixon resigned office in 1974, engulfed by the Watergate scandal.

Moscow's top diplomat, Lavrov represents Russian foreign policies that are often sharply at odds with US aims in Syria and Europe.

If Trump were, in fact, impeached by the House of Representatives, the case would not simply end there.

A USA president has the authority to disclose even the most highly classified information at will, but US and allied officials said that by giving information to Russia, Trump had endangered cooperation from an ally that has intelligence on Islamic State.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., emphatically said he's not commenting on news stories anymore. That seems far, far, less likely to me than a much more characteristic explanation for Trump actions: He was just shooting off his mouth without having any idea about potential consequences. Trump himself said he had "an absolute right" as president to share "facts pertaining to terrorism" and airline safety with Russian Federation.

"I think we know enough now, and there has been enough alleged publicly, to want to bring the director back to testify, ideally in open session either before our committee or the Judiciary Committee", Schiff said to reporters.

Islamic State, or ISIS, holds territory in Iraq and Syria and is a common foe of Moscow and Washington.

Trump has frequently said he wants to improve USA relations with Moscow, damaged by years of disagreement over Russia's role in Ukraine and its backing for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. In addition Trump is facing pointed questions about his discussions with Russian diplomats during which he is reported to have disclosed classified information.

Pelosi said the Democrats will file a discharge petition to demand a vote on the bipartisan bill to establish an independent, outside commission to investigate the president's ties with Russian Federation. Democratic members of Congress, including Representatives Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and Filemon Vela (D-Texas), have also discussed the possibility of impeachment, HuffPost reported.

The Republican chairman of the House oversight committee is requesting that the FBI turn over all documents and recordings that detail communications between former FBI Director James Comey and President Donald Trump.

US VP Pence warns North Korea: 'The sword stands ready'
Trump administration officials in recent days have said the Obama administration's strategy of "strategic patience" is over. North Korea could potentially strike Australia if its missile program was allowed to continue, she said.

"If his objective was to see that Flynn got a square deal then I think that's entirely appropriate", Mr Franks said.

"Something's not happening day after day".

"If there were ever a final nail on the case for an independent prosecutor, this is it", Blumenthal said at the Capitol.

Unfortunately, the White House has been anything but forthcoming about that.

The dollar dropped half a percent in early trade.

This reversal was also evident in currency markets, with the euro climbing to its highest since November 7 - just before the USA presidential election - against the dollar.

For other GOP lawmakers though, the constant barrage of stories involving the Trump White House were taking a toll, as cracks showed among Republicans.

He riled administrations of both parties with his moral certitude and decisions that critics said strayed from ordinary protocol, such as his public announcement - without the involvement of the Justice Department - that the Federal Bureau of Investigation would not recommend criminal charges against Hillary Clinton for her email use.

Could that cover asking FBI director to drop part of an investigation, and later firing him?

Trump departs on Friday for his first overseas trip as president, traveling to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Italy and Belgium on visits that will test his foreign policy skills.

Mr Trump abruptly fired Mr Comey last week, and later told NBC News that he was thinking about the FBI's investigation into contacts between his campaign associates and Russian Federation, which he has derided as fake news, when he did so. According to a White House official, a "conversation of that nature" did not happen.
