Saints near deal with Adrian Peterson

Peterson suffered a knee injury in the second game last season and played in just three games.

Adding a proven running back in Peterson could help establish more balance in the Saints offense, possibly aiding its lackluster, but improving defense.

On Monday came reports that the Buffalo Bills declined to match New England's restricted-free-agent offer to under-appreciated RB Mike Gillislee, who impressively backed up LeSean McCoy in Buffalo past year, rushing for 577 yards at a 5.7-yards-per-carry clip and scoring eight times. ESPN's Field Yates reported over the weekend that the Saints and Peterson had started to make progress on a contract, though nothing was yet definitive. Check back throughout the day for further updates.

Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster, a likely top-20 pick, also tested positive for a diluted sample.

Peterson made the Pro Bowl four straight years between 2007-10, staying mostly healthy the whole time. Ingram has mostly handled timeshares well throughout his career (though his competitive fire has popped up a couple of notable times). The public outrage led to the Vikings suspending Peterson before he was eventually placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List, missing the entire season after just one game.

Butler wound up signing the Pats' offer sheet last Tuesday, three days before there was a deadline on his right to bargain with other teams. So New England gets him and sends Buffalo its fifth-round selection, the 163rd pick, in this week's draft as compensation.

The two sides have continued to negotiate and it sounds like the situation is building steam, according to a league source. Gillislee has been a valuable backup in Buffalo. He has 11,747 career yards and averages 4.9 yards per carry.

The New England Patriots appear unlikely to trade cornerback Malcolm Butler this offseason. The team's leading rusher has had fewer than 160 touches in five of the last seven seasons.
