Ascending to the throne in 1946, the American-born King Bhumibol was one of the few foreign heads of state that late leader Deng Xiaoping met soon after he regained power in November 1978, after the Cultural Revolution.

The controversial billionaire ex-premier was adored by many poor Thais but seen by the elite as self-serving, corrupt and a threat to the monarchy due to his popularity. "I remember King Bhumibol as a highly gifted and gentle person".

"On behalf of the Malaysian people, I wish to express our honest and heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, government, and people of Thailand on the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej", he said.

Kevin Hewison, a professor of Asian Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, said he doesn't expect any immediate dissent internally or from the public about the choice of Vajiralongkorn as the new king.
