Sgt. Steve Owen, 53, was gunned down around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday as he and a deputy responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting a burglary at an apartment building in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-7.

Trenton Trevon Lovell, 27, of Lancaster was arrested in the killing.
A motorcade led by sheriff's deputies and the California Highway Patrol escorted the coroner's van from Lancaster to the morgue near downtown Los Angeles.
Owen, a 29-year department veteran, was hailed by his department as a "man who made a difference".
"He then unsuccessfully searched the body for the sergeant's weapon, with the intent to use it to murder the first responding deputy", the sheriff said.
At the news conference, the sheriff said Owen was a model peace officer who was well-liked by local residents who had met him. Katz said that Owen's wife, his adult son and daughter, and his mother were able to see him in the hospital before he died. Lovell was on parole for that offense at the time he was suspected of shooting Owen, the Times reported.
"I just left 100 officers crying", Parris told the Associated Press.
The gunman then stood over the wounded officer and pumped four more rounds into his body, McDonnell said.
Palmer accorded statesman-like status as tributes flow
Our hearts, thoughts, prayers and sympathies go out to Kit, his kids, grandkids, great grandkids, and his entire loving family. Jack Nicklaus, whose sporting rivalry with Palmer spanned over half a century, said he would "miss him greatly".
"There was only the two of them there initially, so I don't know that we'll ever be able to answer what happened in that split-second", McDonnell said.
Another deputy received injuries and was examined at a hospital but he wasn't shot, authorities said.
Owen's partner, who was at the front of the building, ran to the sound of the gunfire and found the wounded sergeant. Steven Owen was the first one on the scene and, in an attempt to contain the suspect, moved to the back of the residence.
The gunman, meanwhile, ran to the front of the building and jumped into Owen's patrol auto.
A deputy who was injured - but not shot - apparently when the suspect tried to commandeer the fallen sergeant's patrol vehicle, was also taken to a hospital, according to the sheriff's department. As he hid there, police said, one of the teenagers texted deputies, who arrived with a special entry team and rescued them. McDonnell said he did not know if before the shooting Lovell was deemed eligible for Proposition 47, where people with felonies on their records have them reduced to misdemeanors.
A large cordon was established to contain the suspect, who entered another home where two teen children were inside, Katz said.
An aerial photograph from the scene taken by KABC shows what appears to be a shirtless man sitting handcuffed in a driveway with blood on his back, surrounded by officers in green tactical gear. When she looked outside from a second story window, she saw Owen's body lying face-down on the ground next to her home.
In 2014, Owen was one of several deputies from the Lancaster station who were honored by the Sheriff's Department after they captured a gunman in a bulletproof vest who had taken a driver hostage and used him as a human shield after a police chase.
In honor of Sergeant Owen, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
