Shoppers interested in hitting the stores on Thanksgiving Day this year might not have luck at Mall of America.
In recent years, the shopping center was open on Thanksgiving Day.
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that the mall, including Nickelodeon Universe and movie theaters, will be closed on Thanksgiving Day for the first time.
The decision to close the nation's largest mall on Thanksgiving could influence other malls and retailers to do the same.
But this year the shopping center is bucking that trend, and telling mall employees to spend Thanksgiving with their families, according to the AP.

Mall management said that they want to put the emphasis of the weekend on Black Friday, when more than 400,000 people will likely descend upon the area looking for deals. Numerous major retailers and malls have not made their plans for the Thanksgiving weekend season public.
Mall of America's move could impact 14,000 employees who work at the mall or at one of its tenants. Last year, it opened at 6:00 p.m. If all stores at the mall choose to close, almost 13,000 employees will get to spend Thanksgiving at home. It owns both attractions.
Renslow noted that as Mall of America began opening earlier and earlier into Thanksgiving day, it had gotten some split feedback from workers.
