Passaic County authorities confirmed that a gas leak was first reported at the address.

11 people lives in the two multi-family homes that were leveled. When investigators arrived they heard a hissing sound and began evacuating the neighborhood, officials said.

Fire are still smoldering beneath the debris at 16 Goshen, Postorino said. Officials said 12 other buildings were damaged in the blast, with windows being blown out at some while the roofs of others were pierced by flying pieces of wood.

Firefighters in northern New Jersey are pouring water on large piles of rubble, after at two houses exploded in the city of Paterson Tuesday morning. A resident of a home five blocks away said his own house shook, CBS News reported.

Prior to the blast, responding Paterson Fire Department personnel reported a heavy odor of gas at 16 Goshen Street, WABC reported. Many residents were congregating in a nearby park, awaiting word on when they would be allowed to return home.

Neighbors and authorities said that before the blast a rush of gas was so powerful that a hissing sound could be heard on the street, accompanied by a strong gas smell.

It's not yet clear if anyone was injured in the 10 a.m. Tuesday blast in Paterson.

Residents who live as far away as seven blocks from the scene said they felt their house shake.

Neighbors reported smelling a gas-like odor after the blast.

A spokeswoman for Public Service Electric & Gas says the utility was working to determine what had happened and could not immediately comment on the matter.
